The Colombian playmaker is fully expected to leave Real this summer and has been linked with United for several months.
Spanish outlet Don Balon claim the Red Devils have tabled a £70m bid for the 25-year-old.
Real would be willing to do business at that amount and now the decision lies with Rodriguez.
It is said that the ex-Monaco ace wants to feel important at whatever club he joins and will only commit to a deal when he is completely happy.

And Don Balon say Rodriguez would prefer to join Bayern over United to work with Carlo Ancelotti again.
That move will prove more difficult, however, as Bayern will not stump up what United are willing to.
It seems Rodriguez could fail in his attempts to move to Germany as Real will have the final say and are determined to sell to the highest bidder.
Rodriguez has endured a frustrating season with Real this term and has consistently been left out of Zinedine Zidane's first-team.

He did end the La Liga campaign with a flourish scoring seven goals in Real's final ten games to help them to the title.
It is said that Jose Mourinho will hold talks over a swoop for Rodriguez next week.
Bleacher Report claim that the United boss will discuss the transfer with agent Jorge Mendes, who represents both men, in the coming days.
The Special One is reportedly confident a deal can be struck and reckons Rodriguez should replace Juan Mata in his first-team next term.
