Eating out while on this transformation is entirely possible; you just have to know how to control your environment. Sticking to salads and lean protein such as chicken or white fish, paired with carbs like grilled potatoes, keeps things clean. I often have to make special requests like asking them to hold the sauce or bring me egg whites only. Aling Sosing's is often considered to be one of the best carinderias, or local Filipino food restaurants, in all of Manila. The crowd that shows up to eat lunch here everyday reinforces the fact that they are no doubt one of the spots you want to be in Manila, if you’re a food lovers. When I was eating in Manila, eating at Aling Sosing's was certainly among the best local Filipino food restaurants that I tried.

Aling Sosing's is a very typical type of local street food restaurant, sitting on the corner of a street, near to Makati. Just like most carinderias, all the food is prepared ahead of time, and sits at the front of the restaurant. Sweet Soy Chicken Wings

Here is what you'll need!

Servings: 2

8 chicken wings
Salt, to taste
Pepper, to taste 
Potato starch, to dredge 
Frying oil, as needed

Sweet Soy Glaze
½ cup (100 milliliters) soy sauce 
¼ cup (50 milliliters) mirin
¼ cup (50 grams) sugar
¼ cup (50 milliliters) sake
1 clove garlic, grated 

Toasted white sesame 

Preheat oil to about 160˚C/320˚F. 
Season both sides of the chicken wings with salt and pepper. Coat with potato starch.
Fry the wings at 160˚C/320˚F approximately 7 minutes. 
Heat oil to about 180˚C/350˚F. Fry the wings until golden brown, about 3 minutes. Drain them on paper towels. Set aside.
Make the graze. Combine all the glaze ingredients in a shallow pan and bring it to a simmer. Reduce until thick. Toss in the wings.
Sprinkle toasted white sesame.

Freezer-Prep Chicken Pot Pies

Here is what you'll need!

Freeze & Bake Chicken Pot Pies
Makes 6 pot pies

⅓ cup butter
1 onion, diced
3 stalks celery, diced
3 large carrots, diced
1 cup milk
2 cups chicken broth
½ cup flour
1 rotisserie chicken, shredded
1 cup frozen peas 
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon pepper
3 refrigerated pie crusts

6 disposable foil pot pie pans (or ceramic ramekins)

1. In a deep skillet, melt the butter and cook celery, carrots, and onion until tender. 
2. Pour in the flour, and mix in well. 
3. Stirring constantly, add in the milk and chicken broth a little at a time, alternating between the two. Bring to a boil and continue stirring until thickened.
4. Add chicken, peas, salt, and pepper, and stir until combined. Remove from heat and cool.
5. Roll out pie crust and use the foil pot pie dish as a template. Cut a piece of dough for the bottom of the dish that is about an inch thicker than the widest rim of the dish, and a piece that is the same size as the rim. (Roll dough back out and re…

Vegan Shepherd's Pie

Here is what you'll need!

Vegan Shepherd’s Pie
Servings: 5-6

1 tablespoon vegetable oil
2 tablespoons garlic, minced
1 onion, diced
3 stalks of celery, chopped
2 carrots, sliced
2 cups mushrooms, sliced
1 cup corn
¼ cup parsley, chopped
1 tablespoon tomato paste
1 teaspoon thyme
1 teaspoon sage
1 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups veggie broth
1 tablespoon flour

Potato Topping
4 potatoes, peeled and chopped
1 tablespoon vegan butter
½ cup soy/nut milk
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper

Carrot Cake
Preheat oven to 220ºC/425ºF.
In a medium-large pot, over medium heat, combine oil, garlic, and onions. Cook for one minute, until onions start to soften. 
Add celery and carrots, stir until onions are translucent.
